In June 2006 the Institut Català de Retina founded the Research Department with the conviction that a better attention to patients is achieved through a meticulous care supported by professionals strongly educated and trained, by the latest technology and by a rigorous research activity. The fundamental aim of this department is promoting, facilitating and guiding best quality research in the ophthalmology field. The research department has its own facilities and specific and experienced staff.
The clinical research projects that are currently carried out in this department evaluate last generation diagnostic technologies and most adequate medical and surgical treatments for the ophthalmologic pathologies. Our participation in national and international research projects allows us to manage the most advanced technology and the latest treatments. Several companies entrust us to evaluate the most recently developed diagnostic and therapeutic products.
We have several collaboration agreements with the University of Barcelona: one with the Department of Galenic Pharmacy and another to offer three different subspecialties in retina, glaucoma and oculoplastic.
Finally, the ICR is a member of the EVI.CT.SE (European Vision Institute. Clinical Trials. Sites of Excellence), which is composed by only around 83 institutions from all around Europe, that share common standard procedures to perform best quality clinical trials.
In the ICR we are convinced that clinical and applied research, coordinated from our research department, will contribute with new knowledge, rigour and strength to the medical care that we offer.
Research projects
The Research Department was established in the year 2006 and multiple research projects have been made until today.
The ICR is involved in clinical trials of different phases (phase I-IV) promoted by pharmaceutical laboratories. In the first half of 2015 is being conducted a total of 13 trials and 8 simultaneously, of which 6 are promoted by ICR, and one of them involves other Spanish hospitals (multicenter).
Un gran porcentaje del personal de ICR está involucrado en la Investigación y todos ellos cuentan con la formación necesaria y actualizada en buena práctica clínica, indispensable para poder llevar a cabo los ensayos.
ICR participates in Clinical Trials of different phases (phase I-IV) promoted by pharmaceutical laboratories and also carries out projects promoted by its own researchers (medical, optometry, auxiliary and nursing departments).
A large percentage of ICR staff is involved in research activity and all ICR researchers have the necessary and updated training in good clinical practices.
The ICR has a Research Committee that reviews and evaluates each of the trials and projects that may be carried out at the institution. The Research Committee decides which are sufficiently interesting, scientifically innovative and respect ethical principles and only those are accepted and executed.
All clinical trials and studies pass through the Research Ethics Committee (REC), an independent body of ICR, which ensures the protection of patients participating in these studies. Without the prior approval of the IRB, a project or trial cannot be carried out.
