How to take care of a patient who has undergone an eye surgery

It is very important to bear in mind postoperative care that must be performed at home after an eye surgery in order to avoid injuries and inconvenience. Below there is a list of recommendations or tips that we give the patients who have underwent surgery at our center.

General tips

  • It is necessary that you are accompanied during the first 24 hours.
  • Resume the usual food and water intake progressively.
  • During the first days, we recommend the use of dark glasses to go outside.
  • Maintain good daily hygiene, avoid getting water or soap in your eyes and remove secretions with gauze.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  • Go to the scheduled medical visits.
  • In case of pain, take the prescribed analgesic.
  • Comply with the medical team’s instructions (administration of medication, return to normal life…).
  • Avoid sleeping on the operated eye, rubbing it or applying make-up during the first weeks.
  • Do not exert yourself physically during the first days or weeks after surgery, according to the medical team’s recommendations.
  • It is recommended not to bend your head or submerge it in water.
  • In case of doubt, please answer the ophthalmology team.

Tips to put in eye drops

If you have been prescribed a treatment with eye drops that will have to be applied home after the surgery, these tips will help you.

  1. Wash your hands
  2. Tilt your head: slightly lift your chin and look up.
  3. With one finger, gently pull down your lower eyelid.
  4. Take the eye drops container with the other hand. Place it facing down, very close to your eye without touching it.
  5. You will have to instill as many drops as prescribed inside the conjunctival sac of the lower eyelid.
  6. Close your eye and gently press the lacrimal duct for a minute.
  7. If you need more medication, please wait at least 5 more minutes before the next instillation.

Warning symptoms

Following these recommendations for postoperative care in eye surgery, everything should go well and your eye should be normally recovering from surgery. However, if any of these symptoms appears, it is very important to contact the center and/or come to the 24/7 emergencies service as soon as possible:

  • Intense pain
  • Intense red eye
  • Abundant tears or secretions
  • Double vision
  • Sudden vision decrease

Going to the general Emergency Room will be necessary if there are systemic complications, such as:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • General discomfort
  • Allergy symptoms
