
At the end of 2025, a new edition of the Ramon Martí i Bonet Awards in Ophthalmology Research was held, a competition that aims to promote excellence in research at ICR and to showcase the work carried out here.
The awards were presented by the Research Department on December 12, after the candidates had presented their studies earlier in the day at a general ophthalmology clinical session at the Barcelona College of Physicians.

Dr. M. Soledad Pighin, ophthalmologist specialized in retina and Head of the Emergencies Department, received the first prize for “Automated Analysis of the Foveal Avascular Zone in OCTA Before and After Phacoemulsification”. It is an article published at the Journal of Clinical Medicine, counting on the collaboration of Dr. Tsiroukis, Dr. Dyrda and Dr. Jürgens, from the Retina and Vitreous Department.
In her study, the doctor analizes automated methods based on artificial intelligence fot the quantification of the avascular foveal area through OCTA. Both approaches showed a high consistency and reproductibility. Moreover, microvascular changes were identified after cataract surgery in the superficial vascular plexus.

The second prize in the ophthalmology category went to “Refractive Outcomes After Scleral Fixation of the Carlevale Intraocular Lens”, a paper by Dr. Agniezska Dyrda. The article, published in the Journal of Refractive Surgery, also involved Dr. Ignasi Jürgens, Medical Director of the ICR, who accepted the award on behalf of the lead author.
The ophthalmologist presents a scientific exchange on refractive outcomes after the scleral fixation of the Carlevale intraocular lens. It analyzes methodological aspects that can influence the accuracy of refractive calculation. The discussion highlights the need to continue generating high-quality clinical evidence in this field.

The award-winning work in the Optometrists, Assistants, and Nursing category was “Comparison of Four Lens Power Formulas for Sutureless Scleral-Fixated Carlevale Lens”, by optometrist Liliana Araujo along with Dr. Dyrda. Dr. Rey, Dr. Pighin, and Dr. Jürgens also participated.
It is a prospective study that evaluates the accuracy of different power calculation formulas for the sutureless scleral-fixated Carlevale lens. The results show better performance of the SRK/T, Hoffer Q, and Holladay 1 formulas. The Barrett Universal II formula demonstrated lower refractive accuracy in this clinical context.
