Leading ophthalmologists present a guide with recommendations for COVID-19

Dr. Francesc Duch, head of the ICR Refractive Surgery Department, has collaborated as representative of the Institut Català de Retina in a paper prepared by different experts of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology (SEO).

The project, published in the international journal Acta Ophthalmologica, is a consensus guideline that aims to prevent transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus during ophthalmic practice, both in patients and professionals, in outpatient, inpatient, emergency and surgical areas.

Diferents oftalmòlegs de renom han participat a la guia de recomanacions davant la COVID-19
Several distinguished ophthalmologists have participated in the COVID-19 recommendations guide.

A continuación os presentamos algunas de las recomendaciones propuestas en el artículo:

Recommendations in outpatient areas

Outpatient areas correspond to those areas most frequented by patients, such as the reception, waiting room or consultation room. Some of the safety measures recommended by the SEO and implemented in our center are:

  • Use protective screens at the reception desk
  • Make hydroalcoholic gel dispensers available to patients.
  • Signaling the minimum distance between seats in the waiting room.
  • Monitor the health status of professionals on a daily basis.

Recommendations for surgical areas

It is important, both before and during an intervention, to take extreme safety measures regarding COVID-19. Some of the measures recommended by the SEO are:

  • Have a negative PCR result prior to surgery.
  • Provide professionals with personal protective equipment during surgery.

Despite the measures mentioned in the article, the SEO reaffirms the need to constantly review and update them to adapt to situations going forward. It also urges all eye health professionals to follow the measures, both in this pandemic and in future situations requiring health monitoring.
