Dr. Víctor Lázaro, member of the Refractive Surgery Department at ICR, participated as a teacher at the Institutional Course of Refractive Surgery by the European School of Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology (ESASO). The event was held during June 17, 18 and 19 in Lugano, Switzerland.
During his first intervention, Dr. Lázaro presented the lecture “Intraocular Refractive Surgery: Basic principles of phakic intraocular lenses”. This conference explained the concept of phakic lenses, their classification, advantages and disadvantages, indications and contraindications, range of corrections, types, their calculation, complications, safety, effectiveness and surgical technique.
The second communication was called “Preoperative examinations for phakic intraocular lenses implantation”. The doctor explained how to correctly perform the thorough preoperative examination before phakic intraocular lens implantation. The examination includes anamnesis, complete ophthalmologic control and all the necessary complementary tests to decide if the patient is a candidate for the implantation of a phakic lens. After this procedure, it will be necessary to choose the most appropriate technique in each case.
Phakic intraocular lenses are implantable medical devices designed to correct refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism) while preserving the natural anatomy of the eye. There are several kinds of them, among which we can find ICL, IPCL, Eyecryl Phakic, Artisan and Artiflex.
The main relevance of phakic intraocular lenses is their ability to provide precise and effective refractive correction without altering the ocular structure. The implantation of phakic intraocular lenses is a valid and effective option for the correction of refractive defects and to reduce dependence on glasses and contact lenses, providing high predictability and excellent visual acuity results.
