An ocular trauma is any injury affecting the eye or its adjoining structures (eyelids, orbit, tear ducts), caused by an external agent. It may appear to be a one-time incident, but it can often have serious consequences if not treated in a timely and appropriate manner.

At ICR we believe that a fast and accurate response to these cases is essential to treat them successfully. That is why we have reinforced our commitment to specialized training in surgical emergencies with a practical course aimed at our team of emergency surgeons.

First ICR Surgical Emergencies Course

On July 21 and 23, the first edition of the ICR Practical Course on Surgical Emergencies was held, an intensive training course aimed at emergency surgeons of the center. This action is aimed at reinforcing the competencies of the surgical medical team when dealing with patientswith eye injuries and providing them with the tools to act safely and accurately in highly complex situations.

The course took place at the Alcon Experience Center building and dealt in a theoretical and practical way with the suturing of corneal, conjunctiva, sclera, muscle and eyelid injuries. It was taught by professionals from our center with extensive experience in this type of surgery: Dr. Arturo Ruiz, Dr. Felipe Spencer, Dr. Xavier Graell and Dr. Rocío Rodríguez, under the coordination of Dr. Soledad Pighin, Head of the Emergencies Department of ICR.

The Importance of Urgent Care in front of an Eye Trauma

A direct impact on the eyeball can generate different types of injuries, with different degrees of severity, which can cause alterations in the anatomy that may lead to important sequelae. For this reason, in the event of any blow or puncture to the eye, we recommend that you go immediately to the ophthalmology emergency room. Remember that the ICR Emergencies service is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, at 117 Ganduxer street in Barcelona.

Before reaching the medical center, we advise not to rub your eyes, avoid applying eye drops and, if there is a bleeding wound, press it very gently without touching the eyeball.

We improve our training to better assist our patients

With more than 35 years of experience, at ICR we remain committed to clinical excellence, teaching and continuous training. That is why we work every day not only to provide accurate care to our patients, but also to prepare our medical team to act with maximum solvency in any critical situation. The recent training in surgical emergencies is clear proof of this commitment.

When in Barcelona, in case of a blow, a perforation or any other ocular incident, do not hesitate to go to the emergency room of ICR Ophthalmology Center as soon as possible.
